project conclusions

I am really pleased with what I have learnt when completing this project! I have been thinking about how I could improve this project and have made a list to take note of in the next semester!

•  HOW TO WRITE A BLOG - next time, I will try to post daily (little and often works so much
better!) maybe treating more as an online diary on my thought processes
TEST-SHOOTS - experiment and play with different techniques in my own time to perfect application
BE BRAVER - in designing makeup templates and also application - the camera likes to wash out my hard work!
PUBLIC SPEAKING - work on my presentation skills to feel more comfortable talking about my ideas and work
STYLING - collaberate with or conduct more research and experiments into the styling of my looks;
   clothing, accessories, jewellery, THE LOT!
TAKE 360ยบ IMAGES - for evaluation of my techniques
PHOTOGRAPHY - be more experimental with poses of models and angles - TAKE MY TIME
LOTS MORE DRAWING - This has really helped me in this project, and I would like to improve in these skills

Final Miss H images

This is my final Miss H look! I used a very fair foundation to take colour out of my model's face, then used very grey toned grease colours to contour the cheekbones, temple, jaw line, nose and collar bones. I ran the foundation over the lips too, then went back in with a small amount of colour to place right in the centre of the lips to give the impression that she has decayed and looks corpse like on the outside form sitting still and not talking much, but on the inside she is still alive. I also used wrinkle stipple under the eyes and on the lips to give a dry and crusty texture, and applied a powder to the forehead to create lines to age my model. I worked in fullers earth to the hair after curling and pinning the hair loosely into a Victorian up-do. I then added dried flowers and again coated with fullers earth to drain their colour and appear dusty.

EVAL

I am pleased with the contouring of my model, as she does appear very gaunt, however I think that I should have been braver with the application of the colour as the wrinkles and other details aren't accurately picked up by the camera lens. Also, I would have used more fullers earth in the hair, as it looks very full of colour and life (expressing youth) in this image. In the next project I also really want to work on my styling and also testing more make-up ideas prior to shooting.
Additionally, to give more depth to my work and a unique twist, I would like to try shooting on location or with props in the studio to create more interesting final images.

Miss H Shoot prep

If I were on location shooting this look, I would have liked to have seen Miss H slumped across a table in the wedding reception room, almost blending in to the furniture. I would ask my model to contort their body to distort its natural shape, mirroring my idea that Miss H is demented. Although props could be used in the studio, I found it difficult to find or afford materials to create such an extravagant set! So instead I would use the expression of the model and her body language to convey her insanity and haunted look.

STYLING

I want Miss H to appear very ghost like, so I think delicate material is very important. I would have liked to get a very sheer fabric and fray the edges to age the piece, as well as maybe tea-staining the fabric; Unfortunately I didn't have adequate resources to do this. I took a trip to a local fabric store and bought a rich looking fabric that I would pin around the top of my model to give an illusion of a dress; I wanted it to be fairly loose, to suggest Miss H has shrunk within the dress and its now hanging off of her shoulders.

Dramatically Aged Miss Havisham

This version of Miss Havisham is by far the most disturbing, as I played on the idea that she is the un-dead, just haunting the manor house and Estella. I wanted her to be almost demented, and her body contorted from stress and heartache. She is so thin as neither Estella nor Pip (or the audience) ever see her eat or sleep, strengthening the idea that she is just waiting for death. Her cheekbones are almost sticking through her skin, with a layer of age and wrinkles covering her once beautiful face.

The make-up will have to be very strong, and special effect techniques would have to be carried out perfectly for a TV showing of Great Expectations. Heavy contouring will be needed to give a very gaunt look to her face, wrinkle stipple applied underneath the base colour, and supra colours to create veins and liver spots.

For the hair, I decided that the flowers that once decorated her hair are long dead, and a few petals are still trapped in the matted mess of her hair. Jeweled pins are now dusty and dirtied, and the hair itself matted, dry and starting to grey.

The styling will incorporate an off-white material, pinned around the model; I may fray some of the edges to imply age as well as either dying or spraying the garment with coloured spray. I could also use the fullers earth and dust along one side of the dress, suggesting Miss Havisham normally sits still, and is almost becoming part of the house or furniture.

Alternate Miss Havishams

The above face chart represents Miss Havisham on her wedding day, and I thought about choosing this template to give contrast to Estella's character; at this point Miss Havisham would have also been young and beautiful, yet she would not be cold and manipulating like an older Havisham would train Estella to become.

For her make-up, I would add colour to the cheeks, nose and lips (flush) from her crying, keeping the rest of the face very fresh and clean. I would wet the lashes and merge them together to make this seem more realistic (details are key!). For tears I would buy a tear stick or use a model with acting experience.

Her hair would still be in good condition; a fresh up-do prepared the night before. Her hair would be glossy and smooth, and curls tight and bouncy. Fresh english flowers would be used to decorate the hair, as well as a few jewels (a nod to Miss H's wealthy background).

I would style her in a crisp, clean wedding dress but perhaps add some staining along the train of the dress as if she had been outside in the rain (raining after you've been ditched at the alter, how original!) and I would depict her in the reception room, sitting next to the wedding cake.

Ageing Miss Havisham

This image is from the masterclass with the brilliant Kate Benton, where she showed us how to correctly apply a wig, and multiple ageing techniques: veins, bags & discolouration, liver spots and wrinkles.

Here, I experimented with liquid latex and wrinkle stipple alongside my Kyrolan grease pallet to create different skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis.

The image on the right also involved heavy contouring to give the face and neck a gaunt look.

We then looked at products for colouring the hair, such as coloured hair sprays (the white on the dolls hair) and fullers earth, which gives a grey, powdery effect when worked into the roots of the hair.

HAVISHAM FACE CHART

In the above face chart, I focused on creating a mal-nourished and slightly aged Miss Havisham, by concentrating on contour and discolouration. I decided to use fullers earth in the roots, to give a more realistic outcome than the coloured sprays in my opinion. By placing wrinkles in specific places and only using a very thin layer of the wrinkle stipple, I hope to age Miss Havisham slightly, by inferring a lack of sleep.

Designing Miss Havisham

When thinking about my Miss Havisham, I first thought about her make-up in relation to her health and age.

MALNOURISHMENT- perhaps Miss H hasn't eaten properly since her wedding day, through grief, heartache and trying to maintain her weight and appearance if her fiance were to return.
Angular Stomatitis
Breaking Dawn pt 1 - Bella's special fx make-up

Testing in salon with liquid latex

•heavy contour through cheekbones, jaw, eye-sockets and temple • use liquid latex to create dry patches of skin around the nose and chin • latex and grease pallet around the mouth •

TRICHOTILLOMANIA- a nervous twitch or habit as a result of being left at the alter; trying to groom herself or punishing herself subconsciously.

 • without use of a bald cap or wig, this could be difficult to create for TV • could try using a model with a high hairline and using a fine brush to paint on roots of hair •

SLEEP DEPRIVATION- lack of sleep because of grief, spending her nights instead sitting alone in the wedding reception room.

Psoriasis

• ben nye colour wheel and grease pallet under eye • liquid latex under and outer eye to create wrinkles • wax or glue to create bump of flesh (bag) under eye • liquid latex & stipple sponges to create atopic dermatitis and psoriasis •
